increasing a 1x1 rib in the round

I am making a seamless sweater with a 1x1 rib pattern. I just started the sleeve with 40 stitches, and must increase to 64 stitches in 16.75 inches. In order to keep my 1x1 rib pattern, I thought I would do a Make1 increase after my ring marker, and then do a bar increase into the last stitch before the marker. Then I work however many rounds, and do it again at the appropriate spot.

For example, on my first increase, I lift the piece or yarn onto my needle and purl it. Then I can knit the next stitch, purl the next, all the way around until I get to one stitch before the marker, which is a purl. I do a bar increase into this, which makes the final stitch a knit, and I can continue around in pattern until the next time I have to increase.

This is working great as far as keeping my 1x1 rib. However, the M1 increases make a little hole, almost like a yarn-over, and I do not want a little row of holes all the way up the sleeve!

I cannot do a bar increase at the beginning of the round because it wil disrupt my 1x1 rib pattern. Or can I? Am I doing my M1 increases wrong?

If you're lifting the yarn between stitches and purling, then you are creating a yo in the previous row. To prevent holes in the M1 increase, twist the st when you work it. In your case it means purling through the back loop. On a knit row you would ktbl. See if that helps.

First piece of advice would be...start with 41 stitches or 39 so you can start and end with a k1...it will make the whole piece go together better, since you'll be sewing up the middle of two matching k1 ribs...So for each pair of increases I would increase between the first and second stitches and between the next to last and the last stitches. In essence, I would maintain that first and last k1 and then work my increases to correspond to the rest of the piece.

So, assuming you are planning your increases for the right side of your work...

your first pair of increases would go: k1, m1 and knit, *p1, k1*, repeat from * until last two stitches remain on left needle, p1, m1 and knit, k1

and your second pair of increases would go: k1, m1 and purl, *k1, p1* repeat from * until last two stitches remain on left needle, k1, m1 and purl, k1.

you'll basically alternate between these two increase rows (evenly spaced) for a total of 24 increases.

I have been doing the bar increase, and it's working fine, except that I do wish I'd waited for the instructions on the M1 because I think that increase would be cleaner. It's not a huge deal since the yarn is a very soft and fuzzy brushed suri blend with merino and bamboo, so you can't see the bar bumps really, but I think I might rip it out and start over so that I can do the M1s.
