I've only been knitting since December, 2005, and have no intention to ever knit lace. I've been crocheting since Jan., 1977, if I want lace, I'll crochet it.
I've had a request for knitted socks from an elderly friend. I have been using multiple needles for baby hats and fingerless gloves, but I'm scared of shaping the heel for socks.
Can anyone reccommend a good, online (free) sock pattern I can try? I can knit, purl and decrease. I know someone who can probably teach me to increase. Are there any special tricks that will help me shape the heel?

Mon, April 23, 2007 - 10:43 AMThis is one of my favorite referal sites...
www.royea.net/sockdemo1.html
and this is one of my favorite knitting sites...

good luck!!!
p.s. knitting socks can be 'obsessive' and addicting... almost instant gratification once you master it!

Mon, April 23, 2007 - 10:55 AMIn general for a good online tutorial, there is www.knittinghelp.com ; it has videos and dialogue, which is more helpful to me than reading and just looking at pictures.
I know you wanted free and online, but for a sock beginner I would highly suggest the book Sensational Knitted Socks by Charlene Schurch. It shows you how to start, how to turn heels, top down or toe up. So, think about that before you begin ;o)

Mon, April 23, 2007 - 7:54 PMI wouldn't be surprised if knitty.com has some nice sock knitting tutorials (though I don't speak from personal experience).
