Jaywalkers

Hey, knitters!

I decided to make a pair of Jaywalkers in this lovely Colinette yarn. Being a lazy sort, I make all my socks toe-up and with a short-row heel.

I'm having some trouble with this, though. The top of the foot, which is in pattern, looks fab. But, once I get the heel done and an inch or two up the leg in pattern all the way 'round, I have trouble getting the sock over my heel again.

Advice, please?

More stitches, bigger needles, or both.

yeah, I was thinking of making the leg bigger by just adding one stitch to each diagonal bit of the pattern (i.e., instead of k5, I'd k6 and then double-decrease or double-increase).

I had a friend make these and she had the exact same problem. She made the leg in the large size and the heel/foot part in the smaller size. Apparently it worked perfectly.

    (or Carrie's friend)

While searching for pictures of a sweater whose pattern I am now ogling, I found a blogger complain that she had trouble getting her Jaywalkers over the heel. Not only that, she said "google 'Jaywalker too small' to see all the horror stories", so I did. Yikes.

Not sure I want to continue with these now! Maybe I'll just frog the damn thing and use the yarn to make my friend's birthday socks in a nice, plain, ribbed pattern....

If you want to make some fabulous socks, run (don't walk) to the nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of Nancy Bush's "Knitting Vintage Socks." www.interweave.com/knit/boo...ge_Socks/

I've already made three pair of socks from this books and they are fabulous. The patterns are wonderful and range from easy to quite advanced, are very well written and quite frankly, look amazing.

I haven't bothered making the Jaywalkers myself...for the very reason you cited, Dragon. I've heard too many horror stories.
