Cast-Off Loosely? and help with pattern.

I am doing a shrug pattern and I am confused as to the cast off.

The pattern calls for - "Using a 5US needle, work the trim for the left sleeve back and forth in seed stitch for one inch. (I got that) then Cast off loosely. Seam.

Question - what would be the best CO method to use?

I have never done this before. I have to do this on the right side then pick up stitches in the middle of the garment for the ribbing on I guess the top and the bottom.

The rest of the pattern as follows

Pick up stitches for ribbing:

Beginning at the back right shoulder 'seam' with right side facing and using the 5US needle, pich up stitches (which I have kept live) around the entire edge for ribbing as follows:

Back neck section: 20
Left Front: pick up 54
Lower back section: transfer stitches from stitch holder to the 5US needle.
Right Front: pick up 54

This gives a total number of 208 stitches. Work in K2 P2 ribbing for 1 inch. BInd offin the ribbing using the US8 needle.

Any help is welcome. This looked like a simple garment as a one skein item but now I am not so sure.

Should your castoff be stretchy or solid?

If stretchy, try using a cast off for toe-up socks. I use this one:
    knit 2
slip the two stitches back to the left needle
    K those 2 together (1 on the R needle)
    K 1 (2 on the R needle)
slip the two back to the left needle, K2Tog, and repeat.
(once you get the hang of this, you'll probably skip the slipping-to-the-L-needle step and K2Tog from the R needle)

You can also try EZ's sewn bind off.

If it's supposed to be a more rigid edge, then just use a larger needle (maybe a US7 if you're using a US5 for the knitting) and a regular bind off.

    Does this help?

Is this Glampyre's One Skein Wonder? For a loose bind off, either bind off normally and be extra conscientious about not pulling the stitches tightly OR do as is suggested in the pattern and cast off using a larger needle. That's something I do rather often as I have a tendency to bind off tightly.

For the picking up of stitches: Have you done this before, at all? It's fairly simple, though it can be a pain in the -ahem- to get the recommended amount of stitches. For a good tutorial, try <a href="here</a>." title="www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinte...ere</a>.">www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinte...ere</a>. Basically what you're doing is creating a ribbed edging around the non-sleeves part of the garment, so that you'll have a nice finished edge. If you don't mind waiting a day or two, once i'm back in my neck of the woods I can take pictures of the one I did so that you can see it better and I'll then talk you through it?

It depends on how loose you want it to be. You could do a YO in between each stitch on your last row then drop them during the BO. This will give you extra yarn or you could wrap the yarn around twice instead of once in your knit stitches, this will also give you extra yarn.

      Hope this helps

Yes it is the Glampyre One Skein wonder. The pattern did not mention bigger needles to cast off, I used bigger needles to do the majority of the garment and then switch to the smaller needles unless I misread the pattern.

      Thanks for all the responses.

OK I Got the thing cast off but I need help with the rest of the pattern which goes as follows:

I have seamed the arm together to make armholds on both sides this part is for the ribbing only.

        Thanks for any help.
