Hat pattern using Classic Elite, Blythe (dk weight) using 5.5mm needles 9us? gauge 18sts and 24 rows = 4"x4" . The cast on is 80 sts. The question is does this make sense to you old pros? if the yarn is dk wouldn't a size 9 (or even 8) needle be extremely loose in a k1 p1 rib?
