Best CO for toe-up socks?

topic posted Thu, January 24, 2008 - 8:42 AM by  Amy
I bought some yummy new yarn for socks and, since I wanted the socks as tall as I could get away with, I went back to toe-up socks. Now i'm to the cast-off and am dealing with my usual "what oh what is the *best* way to cast this off?" The debate is a little more complicated this time b/c the socks reach up high up on my calf, so very stretchy cast-off is a requirement to make them fit. I've done the sewn cast-off in the past. It looks great when on, but it's still probably not stretchy enough. I tried an I-cord bind-off, but also not quite stretchy enough (but, for ankle socks, it would have been perfect--looks great). Now I'm thinking about trying a lace edging or a picot bind-off, more maybe getting a little crazy and knitting an inch of ribbing and then grafting it only the top of my sock, which I bet will be very stretchy but involves me finding instructions for grafting k2p2 ribbing.

What do the rest of y'all do?

I'm a firm believer in this method:

It's simple to do and doesn't require scissors or extra implements like the sewn bind-off does (I work on my socks mostly while I'm travelling).

I cast on in a double needle figure eight.
(can't remember where i found the link)

So.. lets see if I can explain it.
Take 2 of your dpns. and hold them side by side.
Make your starting loop in your yarn and slid it over one of the needles.
Then wrap under the second and come over the top.
Wrap in a figure 8 (over/under/over/under) between each needle until you have about half of what your cast on should be
(I think I use 10 to 16 sts pending the size sock)

Holding the yarn firmly knit your top needle onto a new dpn, turn your work and knit the bottom one.
after about 3 rows begin to add on your remaining sts to work toward the body of the sock. divide as you reach equal enough parts for each needle.

I THINK I found this set of instructions on knitty.com... but, I cannot find it at the moment.. It may be buried in the archives.
