I'm making a hat using slip stitch double knitting. The question I have is, how do I check the gauge? Obviously there are double the amount of stitches on the needle which measures 23", but that seems huge. Does this mean that since it's double that once it's finished it will be 11 1/2 + diameter? I realize that it should be somewhat stretchy since it's double and you can reverse it, but I don't know how to test the gauge before I get too far into it.

Gauge swatch
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 3:03 PMI would gauge swatch it just like anything else. With a double knit hat, you're basically knitting two hats at the same time that are attached at the cast on edge. You should be able to pull the two layers apart. What pattern are you using? -

Re: Gauge swatch
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 5:02 PMI'm using this pattern. It's just tough to gauge on circular needles. I can't use straight needles even of the same size to test because my gauge is always looser on circlulars.

Re: Gauge swatch
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 7:41 PMHeh, that's the pattern I was going to refer you to for reference! What I do, since I knit differently on circs v. straights, is leave a long float on the wrong side of the work. Like when you're doing i-cord? But instead of drawing it tight, leave an extra long piece of yarn floating in the back so that you're always knitting on the "right side" of the work, like you would be on circulars. It's a pain, but it's kind of a necessary evil. And you're talking to someone that haaaaaaates doing gauge swatches.
