I am making a seamless sweater with a 1x1 rib pattern. I just started the sleeve with 40 stitches, and must increase to 64 stitches in 16.75 inches. In order to keep my 1x1 rib pattern, I thought I would do a Make1 increase after my ring marker, and then do a bar increase into the last stitch before the marker. Then I work however many rounds, and do it again at the appropriate spot.

For example, on my first increase, I lift the piece or yarn onto my needle and purl it. Then I can knit the next stitch, purl the next, all the way around until I get to one stitch before the marker, which is a purl. I do a bar increase into this, which makes the final stitch a knit, and I can continue around in pattern until the next time I have to increase.

This is working great as far as keeping my 1x1 rib. However, the M1 increases make a little hole, almost like a yarn-over, and I do not want a little row of holes all the way up the sleeve!

I cannot do a bar increase at the beginning of the round because it wil disrupt my 1x1 rib pattern. Or can I? Am I doing my M1 increases wrong?

The pattern calls for - "Using a 5US needle, work the trim for the left sleeve back and forth in seed stitch for one inch. (I got that) then Cast off loosely. Seam.

Question - what would be the best CO method to use?

I have never done this before. I have to do this on the right side then pick up stitches in the middle of the garment for the ribbing on I guess the top and the bottom.

The rest of the pattern as follows

Pick up stitches for ribbing:

Beginning at the back right shoulder 'seam' with right side facing and using the 5US needle, pich up stitches (which I have kept live) around the entire edge for ribbing as follows:

Back neck section: 20
Left Front: pick up 54
Lower back section: transfer stitches from stitch holder to the 5US needle.
Right Front: pick up 54

This gives a total number of 208 stitches. Work in K2 P2 ribbing for 1 inch. BInd offin the ribbing using the US8 needle.
Now i'm to the cast-off and am dealing with my usual "what oh what is the *best* way to cast this off?" The debate is a little more complicated this time b/c the socks reach up high up on my calf, so very stretchy cast-off is a requirement to make them fit. I've done the sewn cast-off in the past. It looks great when on, but it's still probably not stretchy enough. I tried an I-cord bind-off, but also not quite stretchy enough (but, for ankle socks, it would have been perfect--looks great). Now I'm thinking about trying a lace edging or a picot bind-off, more maybe getting a little crazy and knitting an inch of ribbing and then grafting it only the top of my sock, which I bet will be very stretchy but involves me finding instructions for grafting k2p2 ribbing.

I've felted a few little things, but I've got a few questions (some of them dumb) and I *know* you lovely people can help me out!

1) Reading the Yarn Harlot has given me a healthy respect for my washing machine's innards (even though I do have a home warranty and I'd love to get a new w/d set out of them if I could). I'm thinking the "zippered pillowcase" she refers to sometimes isn't one of the mesh types that I've seen. Is this really just a pillowcase with a zipper on it? Seems like the cloth would impede water flow. Where would I get one?

2) If I knit, say, a purse with a little pocket on the inside, do I need to separate the pocket from the body of the purse while it felts, or will they felt separately? And, if I do need to separate them, what could I use?

3) What's the optimum size of a load when I'm felting something? My washer is a one-person size washer (basically, one queen-size sheet is a load). I'm thinking "one big towel" would be the right size for a felting load.

Thanks, everyone!

Obviously there are double the amount of stitches on the needle which measures 23", but that seems huge. Does this mean that since it's double that once it's finished it will be 11 1/2 + diameter? I realize that it should be somewhat stretchy since it's double and you can reverse it, but I don't know how to test the gauge before I get too far into it.
It's a great way to use up little bits of yarn, or try out new pattern stitches! You can even make squares out of your gauge swatches... I hate to waste anything. :)

I am new to the Dallas, TX area and am trying to find a friendly, well-stocked yarn shop. I went to one last weekend and was treated very rudely, which was something of a surprise to me as my general experience in Dallas has been one of polite, friendly, helpful people. Plus the shop was just a jumbled up mess of every kind of yarn from craft store cheap to wonderful, yummy Debbie Bliss yarns. A mess! Admittedly, I am from Portland, which seems to have a knitting shop on every corner, so I realize I am spoiled, but still, I expected to, at the very minimum, be treated with respect.
So where do you like to buy yarn? What shops are helpful without being condescending? What shops have a good selection of Rowan yarns?

This is not an emergency request. Yesterday, I flew to Oregon to spend the holidays with my adult kids and to see friends. This Thursday, a group of fellow yarn maniacs and I are going to Yamhill County wine country on a pilgrimage to Woodland Woolworks and to drink wine. Woohoo! I just hope, for the sake of my checkbook, that we buy yarn BEFORE we drink wine! It should be a really fun day, but I can't jump on a plane and fly to Portland every time I start a project. ANY suggestions are welcome and thank you SO much!

I have worked up the nerve to jump in, but am looking for some advice. I have dyed yarn before, but only cotton with procion dyes. When I did the cotton yarns I used squirt bottles to apply the color with a soda ash soak, and left it overnight in a warm spot. The acid dyes came with instructions for the washer and the stove top. I am headed for the stove top - it looks more controllable, and I have a front loader washer. So here are my questions:

1. To make a variegated yarn drape 1/2 the skein in/out of the pot and then swap? Should I soak the yarn in water first?
2. What about 3 colors? Use a stick across the top of the pot to hold it up?
3. Could I apply the colors with a squirt bottle/turkey baster/brush? and then microwave the yarn to heat set it? How long? on high? How much dye to liquid? When do I add the vinegar?

Any other dyers out there???????

The scarf is supposed to be 18 ft. long, but I am gonna shorten it a bit to 12-14ft. so it isn't so unwieldy. I am also making it slightly narrower with 50 stitches instead of the 60 recommended.

Wish me luck!!

Our office will be giving hats, scarves and gloves to a local elementary school this Christmas as part of a reading program. I would love to whip out a few scarves using some of my odd yarns. I've got quite a few hats made, but I'd like to make some scarves. I can crochet a simple scarf in an evening, but it would help if I had some measurements to make scarves of a size more appropriate to younger children.

I figure there are some experienced Moms that can help me with the measurements.

Even though it was superwash, I washed it like my regular wool sweaters, using the handwash cycle of the washing machine. It came out stretched. The fibers have all relaxed, so it's now several inches too wide and long. Laying it out flat and trying to smooch it back into shape to dry didn't help. Is there anyway to coax it back into its original shape? I've had this happen w/ smooth fiber yarns (specifically soy silk), but never experienced it with wool.

Hey, knitters!

I decided to make a pair of Jaywalkers in this lovely Colinette yarn. Being a lazy sort, I make all my socks toe-up and with a short-row heel.

I'm having some trouble with this, though. The top of the foot, which is in pattern, looks fab. But, once I get the heel done and an inch or two up the leg in pattern all the way 'round, I have trouble getting the sock over my heel again.

Advice, please?

Ann Norling has a pattern called "Headhuggers - Any Size Any Gauge Hats." It has instructions for making simple ribbed hats and a chart that tells you how many stitches to cast on if your gage is X st/inch and your size is Y inches.

I want a generic sock pattern that does the same thing. Does anybody know of one similar to this? They are all over the internet, but I need a published one.
Do you paint? Write poetry? Make erotic art sculptures of Dave

DJ Death Squad Productions is putting on its first however-so-often-
it-happens White Elephant Art Swap. You give art. You get art. From
someone you totally don't even know! Interested? Follow this yellow
brick road of guidelines:

1) You must have an original artwork (any medium- words, paint,
tunes, etc.) in mind before you sign up, and you must give a detailed
description and/or photo with your sign up. To sign up send your full
name and mailing address to djdeathsquad@gmail.com. I will collect
around 50 names / artists before cutting off the swap. US addresses
only at the moment for postage / timing reasons, although I will be
organizing a worldwide art swap at a later date if this works out.
Artworks must be of your own original creation although
collaborations are still considered groovy.

2) The official swap will be held on March 10th, 2007. On this date
you will receive the mailing address of the person you should send
your artwork to. Your artwork must be mailed no later than March 20th.

3) On March 10th another artist will have received your mailing
address and will be sending you an artwork. This will not likely be
the same person you sent artwork to.

4) After the swap, if you would like to share a photo or comments
regarding the artwork, you can email them to me and I will slap them
up on a really sexy art swap community page I have yet to build.

Questions? Post 'em! I'm ready. Oh and please pass the word along!
Thanks!

I think it's because i'm not getting something in the directions I don't get. I end up with only 20 st. not 21 as listed.

Sl 1, k2tog, yo, k2tog tbl, (k1, yo) twice, (yo) twice, (k1, yo, k1) into next st, (yo, k1) twice, (yo) twice, k2tog, k1, 21 sts.

i think i'm befuddled by the "(k1, yo, k1) into next st". it feels like that's the one spot i am not clear on and i'm using up an extra stitch to do it, therefore lacking one by the end of the row.

thanks if anyone can shed light!

I've never seen it set out this way, charging by the yard instead of by the time. Very interesting. It would take care of the trouble of not knowing how long it will take, but wanting to give a firm estimate.

FloryKnits.com floryknits@yahoo.com

How much should I charge for my hand knitting?
I asked members of several knitting lists how they would price their work and this is what came out.

Tally up:
the cost of the yarn and any notions required (buttons and such) plus
$0.10 per knitted yard of yarn for plain stocking stitch
$0.15 to $0.20 per knitted yard for texture and colorwork
$0.25 per knitted yard for lace, complicated textures and/or colorwork
extra if the yarn is a pain to work with
extra if they want it fast
extra for complicated shaping or finishing
extra for creating the design

How much the "extra" should be is entirely up to you; aggravation factor is usually a good barometer.

A plain stocking stitch, circular, sweater made from an economy yarn and about 40 inches around will tally up to about $200.00.

Before you agree to knit for someone make sure that you are not violating copyright and/or fair use laws.

I have been crocheting for a year or two and decided I wanted to learn knitting as well. I got the Stich 'n Bitch book. I can cast on but I can't seem to make the knit stiches. (It looks like I'm just transferring from one needle to another without adding anything.) Are there any online resources you recommend? I hope I can figure this out! Knitting looks fun...

If I know that the bigger bag will be 6 inches, can I cast on 6 inches worth of stitches in the smaller yarn and then follow the pattern as written? Or will the increases and decreases not work out with a larger number of stitches?

For reference, here is a link to the pattern. There are three sizes of bags, and I would like to make the medium sized one.
